During this time, recent college graduates Joe Smith and John Heller joined a company in the lumber sales business that quickly evolved into a pallet sales business, connecting pallet manufacturers with pallet users throughout the Midwest.
In 1990, Heller and Smith believed they could achieve success by combining their experience with a culture where all employees embraced an entrepreneurial spirit and placed a high emphasis on developing excellent mill relationships while achieving a higher level of personal satisfaction in their work lives. In July 1990, they formed H&S Forest Products, Inc. to achieve this goal.
Company growth was achieved through outstanding service provided to industry and professional contacts. At the end of 1996, H&S had nine employees.
Bill Biersteker, an industry veteran who had worked with Heller and Smith, joined H&S in 1997 and became a co-owner in 1999. By the end of 2001, H&S had grown to 16 employees.
